Invest an Hour in the Life of a Child

With school getting underway this month, new volunteers are needed to work with children in several P4OC programs. Consider giving an hour per week of your time to make a difference in the life of a child. There are many choices available for working one to one with children of various ages, at various times of the day or week and at different locations across Otoe County:

Study Buddies Tutoring Program pairs a volunteer from the community, high school age or older, with an elementary student. The two work together one hour per week in a community setting so the child can improve reading or math skills. Volunteer tutors are needed in Nebraska City, Syracuse and Talmage. The next Study Buddies tutor training will be held in Nebraska City at Arbor Bank on Tuesday, September 7, at 5:30 pm. For more information contact Holly at 873-6343.

TeamMates Mentoring Program pairs an adult volunteer from the community with a student who can benefit from an another positive adult role model in his or her life. The two meet one hour per week at school and share a variety of activities. Volunteer mentoring opportunities are available with students at Hayward Elementary and Nebraska City Middle School. The next TeamMates mentor training is Monday, August 30 at 6:30 pm at the Nebraska City Center for Children and Families. To inquire or register, please contact Stacie at 873-6343.

Otoe County CASA Court Appointed Special Advocates Program matches an adult volunteer advocate with children from one family. The volunteer speaks up for the best interest of the child in court. A 30-hour CASA volunteer training is currently underway in Otoe County. Contact Jo at 873-6343 for more information.
