Study Buddies is a one-to-one tutoring program offered for first through fifth grade children in Otoe County. Study Buddies matches an elementary student, referred by the classroom teacher, with a trained volunteer to work together one hour each week on reading or math skills in a community setting. Study Buddies Program Coordinators communicate regularly with each child's teacher so student learning is consistent with the curriculum that students are studying in the classroom. The goal is to increase basic reading and math skills while making learning fun! Study Buddies sessions are offered once a week for 12 weeks each school semester.
Study Buddies in Nebraska City
Study Buddies will meet for the 2011-2012 school year from 5:00 - 6:00 at the Arbor Bank in Nebraska City. Changing the day of the week Study Buddies meets will allow some students to attend the Hayward Homework Club and Study Buddies without any schedule conflicts. We are pleased to announce that Carla Uhrmacher will be coordinating the Study Buddies Tutoring Program this school year. Ms. Uhrmacher is the High Ability Learning Coordinator at Nebraska City Public Schools. She also coordinates the Homework Club on Tuesdays at Hayward Elementary. She has been teaching in the district for nine years. We are excited for the opportunity to have a teacher within the school district coordinating Study Buddies! Ms.Uhrmacher is current on the school's curriculum for all grade levels and she will be able to connect more easily with classroom teachers for greater continuity between what the student is learning in school and needs to work on at Study Buddies. You can email Ms. Uhrmacher or call 402-873-6343 for more information. If a session is cancelled, we will make every effort to contact students and tutors directly otherwise we will have a cancellation on the door at Arbor Bank, post it on our web site, post it on Facebook or on KNCY's website.

Make a difference in the life of a child by volunteering one week of your time to be a Study Buddies Tutor. If more people volunteer to tutor, more children will be served in the Study Buddies program. Volunteers are matched with students to work one-to-one each 12-week semester. Substitute tutors are also needed. Student and adult volunteers must be in the 9th grade or older. Volunteer candidates are asked to complete an application form, complete three reference checks, pass a screening through the Nebraska Child Abuse/Neglect Central Registry, and complete a one-hour tutor training before tutoring children in the Study Buddies Program.
